Crosswords, Puzzles and...
... a Hotel in Rügen
I had booked
a 2 week holiday on the island of Rügen, which is the largest
Baltic Island in Germany. Friends of mine, who had been to the
island before, recommended I should stay at a Hotel Rügen or
the Baltic Sea Apartments, so I did both. The first week I
booked in at the Baltic Sea Apartments and the second week I
stayed at the Hotel Rügen.
Like always when I am going on a long journey, I equipped
myself with lots of crosswords and puzzles to keep me occupied
while travelling. I also took with me lots of magazines which
usually have crosswords and puzzles in them. Having read all
the articles, I then try to work out the crossword and whatever
puzzle there is. I have been doing crosswords since being a
child. While other children might not be remotely interested, I
always had one on the go and spent more time doing crosswords
and puzzles than watching the television. So having made sure I
had quite a few to keep me going I set off to Rügen.
By the time I had arrived at the Baltic Sea Apartments I had
completed all my crosswords and puzzles. I know I should have
saved one or two for the journey back home but surely I would
be able to get some more before the two weeks were over. I
thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Baltic Sea Apartments
(Ferienwohnung
Ostsee) and
felt rather sad when the first week was over and I had to
transfer to the Hotel Rügen. But what a surprise I had when
I arrived there. Putting my suitcases down in the Reception,
as I waited to be checked into my room, something caught my
eye. A Poster was on the wall advertising a Crossword
competition which was to take place that very evening if
there were enough people interested. Needless to say, this
was an opportunity that I certainly wasn't going to miss. I
might even have a chance of winning. This was the one thing
that I was really good at. I immediately made enquiries and
having checked in I proceeded to find out more.
The receptionist told me that as far as she knew there would be
six crosswords, each one getting harder and whoever finished
first and was correct would win a trip to see Prora. Prora is a
vast reinforced concrete holiday camp built by Adolf Hitler in
the late 1930's to prepare people for the forthcoming war.
Construction was never completed and no-one ever did have a
holiday there. The building stretches for three miles alongside
one of the islands finest beaches .This holiday was just
getting better and better. What more could a crossword fanatic
like me ask for? Having all day to explore the many sights on
the island, I couldn't wait to get back to the
Hotel in
Rügen in the
evening and join in the fun. Thank goodness I had booked my
second week at the Hotel Rügen..
