Crossword puzzles are word
puzzles that typically take the form of square or rectangular
grids of black and white squares. The goal of crosswords is to
fill in the white squares with letters which form words or
phrases. This is done by solving clues given with the puzzle.
In languages that are written from left to right, as in the
English language, the answer words and phrases will be place
din the grid from left to right and then again from top to
bottom. The black squares used in the puzzle are simply to
separate the words or phrases from each other.
Squares in which the answer
words or phrases begin are typically numbered. The clues are
then referred to by those same numbers and the direction in
which they point. Puzzles appearing in many US newspapers and
magazines typically feature solid chunks of white squares. Each
letter is checked and the answers are required to contain at
least three letters. The black squares in these puzzles are
normally limited to about one-sixth of the crossword design. In
other areas such as in Britain and Australia, the puzzles
feature a structure that resembles lattice work and have a
higher percentage of black squares. Up to half the letters in
each answer remains unchecked. If the top row has an answer
that runs across the entire length of the puzzle, for instance,
then there will be no across answers in the second
row.
The answer clues will
traditionally be placed beside, above or under the grid. These
are divided into two lists, one for Across and one for Down.
Numbers are typically not repeated and the cells are labeled
consecutively normally from left to right across each
row.
Crosswords can be found in
virtually every newspaper, many magazines and online. General
knowledge crosswords can be very enjoyable and many people
spend hours working on them. The final goal of finishing the
puzzle is a very rewarding experience for some people. General
knowledge crosswords can contain any types of clues, whereas
other crossword puzzles may be specific to one topic such as
Celebrities or Animals. Filling in all the clues and ensuring
that they are all correct is the only way in which to win at a
crossword puzzle. You must ensure that your answers are correct
otherwise the next clue answers that correspond to those you
have already filled in will not be correct, and so
on.
Many people purchase their
Sunday paper subscriptions simply for the crossword puzzles
inside. This tradition has been carried out by millions of
people for many years. Normally there will be an answer grid
that allows you to check your answers for correctness, although
many newspapers do not print this answer grid until the
following week. If you are doing crossword puzzles online, you
can normally learn if your answers are correct as soon as you
type them into the answer blocks. Other publications especially
puzzle books themselves, will offer you the answers to your
puzzle in the back of the book. his site will be about
crosswords and puzzles.
